The school that I work at is a Leader in Me school.
Perhaps you have heard or seen a popular book called The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The 7 Habits book is the foundation of a Leader in Me school.
I call 7 Habits an airport book. 7 Habits, along with other books such as How to Win Friends and Influence People, seem easily recognizable and continue to occupy space in the front section of airport bookstores.
Obviously, with all the business travelers there is an interest in personal growth – as it relates to professional success and otherwise.
One trend among authors or creators of successful personal growth strategies is to study great leaders. It seems that popular authors of human potential base their findings on a compilation of trends they find in their studies. They then create a straight-forward, relevant process to share with others.
I would add that the authors seem to hold a belief that anyone can access alignment with the principles, and as a result experience success (a relative term) and fulfillment to a greater degree.
One other author with a popular airport book is Napoleon Hill: Think and Grow Rich. The book was published in 1937.
I have yet to read any of the three books in their entirety because the stories and language they use is too old fashioned for me. This is not to say that I don’t connect to the core principles and see the relevant application in 2018.
Leader in Me…the leader is in me…I lead my thinking…
I love the skill of self-awareness as it simplifies patterns and allows a greater understanding of complex concepts.
One simple skill that comes from building greater self-awareness is On Board thinking.
To keep it simple, On Board thinking is a tool that can release resistance to new ideas. When hearing an idea that is different, could you be open to allowing the energy of possibility rather than refusal?
For example, consider that the school system is building global citizens of a digital culture.
This idea can create a strong resistance.
To bring it even closer, imagine teachers and staff…they are being asked to teach and relate to children who are born into this digital culture. In my opinion, the digital culture is synonymous with global citizenship.

Tool #1: On Board thinking
First step is to recognize resistance.
Some play of control and resistance is usually at work when we get the sense of being stuck or in a state of constantly pushing against someone or something (ie. complaining)
I can use On Board thinking as a tool to ‘get on board’. First I have to lessen resistance. Resistance is an internal state. We can be pushing against something whether we are aware of it or not. Control and resistance are a pair – one cannot exist without the other.
The next step can happen by choice once I recognize resistance.
What can I get on board with?
I may not _________ but I can (get on board with)__________
Resistance is the invisible wall that seems to want to keep us from that which seems too difficult or overwhelming. We can learn to soften resistance by practicing On Board thinking.
On Board thinking – choosing a thought, image, or idea that you can focus on to get ‘on board’…
“I may not be ready to change my ideas about how to inspire and motivate the children in my classroom using technology and digital thinking….but I can be open and get ‘on board’ when it comes to learning how technology and digital thinking is influencing the education of my own children, grandchildren, friend’s children, nieces/nephews, etc.”
What can you get ‘on board’ with? Imagine the challenging situation or circumstance as a ride…a journey…first you’ve got to find a way to get on board…
